What Is Data Security: The Role Of Confidentiality, Integrity And Accessibility

As more and more businesses move into the information age, it is becoming very important that everyone knows what is data security. The concept of data security is increasingly gaining acceptance because of the increase in identity theft and a number of cyber crimes. While most people think that security of data is just about making sure that nobody can access the information, the truth is that data security is composed of three aspects of Confidentiality, Integrity And Accessibility.

Confidentiality: This is the primary but by no means the only component of data security. Most of the data security systems that you can find in the market are geared towards ensuring the confidentiality of data. The mainstay of confidentiality is that data must be safe from prying eyes of the people who are not authorized to access it. There are a number of systems which allow you to maintain the confidentiality of data.

You can use cryptography, password protection, biometric scanner systems and a plethora of other systems to restrict the access to data. Remember that confidentiality can only stay in place as long as every person in the loop is committed to maintain it. A chain is as strong as its weakest link, which means that in case any of the people responsible to ensure confidentiality lapse in their work, the entire exercise becomes a waste.

The second main aspect of information security is that you must ensure integrity of data. The concept of integrity means that the data must stay in a pure form, in the exact form in which it was supposed to be. In case the integrity of data gets compromised, it would not be of any use, any more. You can not make any compromises with the integrity of data considering that whatever measures you take when you ensure confidentiality are tested in this part.

There are various ways to ensure integrity of data. Some of the most common methods are usage of cryptographic hashes which would change in case a set of data gets altered. At the physical level, this is done by ensuring safety of storage media. There are a number of data security systems which provide you integrated features to ensure data integrity.

The final part is accessibility. What good is a data security system unless it is able to provide you access to your data when you need it! It is a must that data security systems provide fast and easy access to people who are actually authorized to get that data.

Now that you know what is data security and what are its key aspects, it would not be very difficult for you to deploy information systems security infrastructure for your organization.
